Student opportunities and activities
At Petersham Public School, we offer a variety of programs in the classroom and across the school to help students build new skills, make friends and explore new interests.
High Potential and Gifted Education
All teachers at Petersham Public School have undertaken extensive training in High Potential and Gifted Education.
The following principles guided the development of the HPGE policy:
- All students, regardless of background or personal circumstances, require access to learning programs that meet their learning needs and support to aspire to, and achieve, personal excellence.
- Our commitment to high expectations for all students includes high potential and gifted students.
- Achieving excellence for high potential and gifted students is underpinned by effective school environments including quality teaching, learning and leadership.
- Potential exists along a continuum, where differing degrees of potential require differing approaches and levels of adjustment and intervention.
At Petersham PS, we follow Françoys Gagné's definitions of giftedness and talent established in the Differentiated Model of Giftedness and Talent DMGT 2.0 (2009).
The definition of high potential students across creative, intellectual, physical and social-emotional domains expands the group of targeted students. All students who are identified as High Potential and/or Gifted will have a personalised learning plan. Contact us, to hear about how we support our learners.

Our extra-curricular highlights
Creative and performing arts
Our drama, music and art programs help students be creative and express themselves. They can join in concerts, art shows and drama activities. We have 11 music ensembles and proudly perform at the Opera House and Town Hall annually, as well as take part in School Spectacular every second year.
Trips and excursions
Our students enjoy getting out of the classroom to explore, learn and try new things. These experiences help them grow, build confidence and see how their learning connects to the world.
